Gourry first runs into Lina when he "saves" her from a band of vengeful bandits. When he takes a look at the one he had saved, he is terribly disappointed that he wasted his time saving a little girl when he was looking forward to meeting some babe. He decides to "help" Lina travel to Atlas City, but that term gets prolonged for future adventures. Gourry is a traveling mercenary and, like Lina, eats LOTS of food! He is well known for his stupidity but great swordsman skills. (In Amelia's words: "Mr. Gourry may not be very smart, but he is a great swordman!")
Gourry may be the son of Rowdy Gabriev and Meliroon from Slayers: The Motion Picture (he must have gotten his looks from his dad, his tallness and blonde hair from his mom, and his brains from being half-elf), and if it weren't for Lina, Gourry would have never been born because Meliroon was killed before she changed the past. Besides, Rowdy said it wouldn't just help them, that it would also help Lina! (she was obviously rewarded with Gourry's existence) Also, Rowdy must have passed the Sword of Light, the Gabriev family heirloom, down to Gourry.
Although Gourry knows Lina ins't a defenseless little girl (dang, he should know by now!), he decides to protect Lina for the rest of his life. In NEXT, Gourry and Lina are sitting by the fire in the middle of the night, and while Gourry is feasting on a chicken wing (or something) Lina asks for how long he plans to protect her for. He answers by saying, "Hmm... the rest of my life?" Lina blushes up a storm by this time. "The rest of..." She is suprised that he is willing to sacrifice the rest of his life for her.
