Believed to be the grandson and the great-grandson of the Red Priest Rezo, he was cursed by Rezo when he wished for more strength, which little did he know would transform him into a chimera; one-third golem, one-third demon, and one-third human. He is still partly human, but the golem part of him makes his skin as hard (and obviously as heavy too) as stone and his hair as stiff as wire, while the demon part gives him to ability to move with inhuman speed (or so I heard; a good example is in the first series right after he tosses Lina. how rude). Zelgadis is extremely self-conscious as well as ashamed by his monstrous appearance, which forces him to always pull over his hood in public and such. He is constantly in pursuit of a cure for his "condition" so he can become normal again.
Zelgadis specializes in shamanist magic, but also possesses a little bit of black magic and a white magic healing spell (that I know of). The sword he wields is a special enchanted sword which he uses with the Astral Vine.
Zelgadis starts out being secluded and closed-hearted, but after he joins up with Lina and the gang, he doesn't seem as lonely as he used to. Although most people out there completely disapprove of it, they just can't admit that although Zel tries not to show it, he really does care for Amelia. (That's just the truth, not an opinion. So there! No offense to anyone...) Amelia looks on what is on the heart rather than the appearance, which I think a lot of people could learn from her example. He goes out of his way to protect her when she is in grave danger. For example, in the battle with Gavv in NEXT, Lina is weak and Gourry and Zel are down and about to be slashed when Amelia comes to the rescue. Gaav threatens to strike Amelia with a possibly deadly blow and although Zel himself is hurt pretty badly, he jumps up to get her out of harms' way ends up taking the blow instead of her. Zel is flung suprisingly far with Amelia (a rather startled Amelia at that!) in his arms. Of coarse, she gets her chance to save him too by casting a healing spell. ^-^ And if anyone has noticed, Amelia is the absolute only one who can make Zel blush!
(Just some misc. info: I remember when I first saw Slayers, Zelgadis became my favorite character partly because of his name; I was in my Legend of Zelda phase and I quickly noticed that the beginning of his name sounded similar to "Zelda". Later when I saw NEXT, my sister and I were comparing Zelgadis to Link and also noticed that he has an enchanted sword just like Link! When he casts the Astral Vine for the first time, he even strikes energy and makes it back-fire... Link does that all the time... Anyway, I though that was kind of scary how similar they are in some ways... I seem to have this "thing" for pointy-earred characters because Zelgadis is my favorite Slayers character and Link is my favorite video game character.)
